Requirements Overview

Chapter 8: Marriage

MARRIAGE: Jesus is brought into the lives of a couple to give them support and encouragement to their commitment to each other. Matthew 19:4-6 Jesus replied, "Have you not read that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female and declared, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and cling to his wife, and the two shall become as one.' Thus they are no longer two but one flesh."

Goal: As a Scout, to investigate how Marriage helps spouses grow in holiness and to witness to Christ's love through each other and their families.

A. Life Experience

1. Discuss the following with your AAD Group/Counselor: a) Have you had a Scouting experience that required other Scouts to help you? What was it? b) Share the elements that make a smooth, efficient, and successful Scouting experience. c) For a Scouting experience to be at its best, your unit must work together as a close team. This makes for successful teams in football, basketball, soccer, and baseball, as well as in Scouting and other walks of life. In your unit, is there one member that you seem to work better with than the others? Why? d) Is this person your best friend in and out of Scouting? If so, why? If not, who is your best friend and why?
   
   

2. In creating human beings, God made it natural and necessary to seek companionship and support from others. Genesis 2:18-25 relates one example of this companionship and support. Read and share your views with your AAD Group/Counselor.
   
   

3. Discuss the following with your AAD Group/Counselor. a) How does a married couple function as one? b) What happens when teamwork or unity breaks down in marriage?
   
   

B. Activity

1. Do one of the following: a) Attend a Catholic wedding. Share with your AAD Group/Counselor what impressed you most about the homily, readings, and wedding ceremony. How do the vows and rings express the couple's commitment to one another? b) Read the Rite of Marriage in Appendix F. Discuss with your AAD Group/Counselor. Write a paragraph about the commitment required of a couple. How do the vows and rings express the couple's commitment to one another?
   
   

2. The importance of this companionship through marriage can be seen in Jesus' beginning His public ministry and teaching at a wedding feast. Read John 2:1-11.
   
   Discuss the following with your parents: a) What was meaningful to them when they received the Sacrament of Marriage? b) Why did they feel called by God to be married? c) How do they help the Church as a married person and/or couple?
   
   

3. Read I Corinthians 13:4-7 with a married couple approved by your Counselor. Have them share with you how marriage helps them grow in holiness and witness Christ's love to each other and their family.
   
   

4. Discuss with a married couple how the Sacrament of Marriage helps them live out their Christian commitment to their community. Does this conflict with society's presentation of marriage in movies, TV, newspapers, magazines, etc.? Explain.
   
   

5. After completing numbers 3 and 4 above, discuss the results with your AAD Group/Counselor.
   
   

6. Do the following: a) One of the purposes of the Sacrament of Marriage is to provide a stable and loving environment in which to have and raise children. Discuss this with your AAD Group/Counselor. b) Considering the previous question, discuss with your parents and/or another married couple approved by your Counselor, the level of maturity needed to marry. c) List the qualities needed to become a good husband and father, wife or mother.
   
   

C. Faith Response

1. Do something that will help your family grow stronger and stay committed to unity. For example, ask your family to share one regular meal per day together. Recalling the discussions you had about cooperation in your unit (see above sections A-1b and A-1c), how was that similar to what you did to promote family unity and strength? Write a short paper or a long paragraph about this and attach it to this book.
   
   

2. In appreciation of what you have learned and experienced about married life, select a couple whom you admire and do one of the following: a) Make a poster or banner about why you appreciate them. b) Make a video presentation (video, movie, etc.) about how and why you appreciate them. c) Make an audio presentation (storytelling, music selection, etc.) about how and why you appreciate them. d) Make a play (puppet, drama, etc.) about how and why you appreciate them. e) Write an article (story) about how and why you appreciate them.
